Evaluation

This project was extremely different in some aspects to our previous projects. The main reason for this was that we had to write and come up with our own idea and brief for this project, which was something I initially struggled with, but when I got my idea I felt it was enjoyable and interesting enough to research into.

I initially started off researching into specific world problems such as gender equality but then realised that I wanted to expand my horizons further and look at different projects from other artists dn designers dealing with the same pathway of Advocacy. This really inspired myself to challenge and create something which I had no experience in before, which turned out to be packaging, and strengthening my skills in creating a strong identity. I started researching into different world issues which could be dealt with locally, and this led myself onto local food producers, and how their foods are more organic, as well as helping local communities build ties and build the local economy.

I researched into a wide range of different areas which deal with local food production, and after further discussion with my tutor decided that the solution for this project is to create a franchise which will allow local areas to buy into and then sell locally produced food under the name of the brand, which will be sold in a pop up event of a farmers market. The franchise will provide packaging, banners, label maker, and stickers. And will an opportunity on the stickers for the local producers to write their own brand or farms information, this way it is supporting and promoting the locally sourced food.

The identity I explored a few different name ideas but eventually went with the name Kindred Foods, as I felt the word kindred really worked with the purpose and underlying point of my franchise. To build communities and bring people together. I wanted a modern identity which would help draw in a younger fresher audience basis. The identity was developed throughout the project, and eventually I had a pink identity which stood out on the chosen paper stock, was bold, and worked very contemporary. The identity can also work in a black and white version, as seen on the sticker.

Initial experiments started off looking at different imagery and illustrations, and through research I realised that a lot of the successful modern and fun packaging designs included illustrative components, and I really wanted to expand my own design imagery to explore patterns. Therefore I set up my own composition of imagery for fruit and started experimenting with a style of illustration. Once I had the imagery sorted I started exploring pattern layouts, which took a while to create a well balanced and equal pattern which would be used across the packaging range.

The packaging bags and the stickers were elements which I struggled with the most due to the layout. Eventually after further development myself and a tutor discussed that having the pattern across the whole bag and the identity just on the stickers would make the packaging more successful which it did. The sticker has two different designs one circular for the deli wrapping sheets, and one rectangular for the paper packaging bags. This meant that each one belong to another and it was different for different purchases. The sticker has the bright vibrant pink colour choice, which makes the packaging more vibrant and modern.

All of the deliverables have the same layout consistency that the identity and the imagery never actually touch. On the banner there is a white space behind the identity. This helps to make sure that the identity stands out and doesn’t get over powered by the imagery, as it is quite a busy pattern.

I am happy with all of the deliverables outcomes however if I had more time I would to go back and develop some of them further for example the tote bag. I think this is probably one of the unresolved packaging due to the screen printing rooms accessibility and time I was not able to go back and print some more. Due to the thinness of the line weight it meant that the emulsion ribbed some of the lines away on the screen, and also the ink bled through quite a bit leading to patchy areas of the print. I would also have loved to have tried printing on the crate to see how the outcome of the design would have turned out. I think to improve upon my outcomes I would have dealt with my time management better, and booking in advance for different facilities.

However, overall I think he project was really successful, my final deliverables are consistent to one another. And my idea answers what the brief required to help and support local food producers. My branding is modern and vibrant yet very natural resourced which will help to reach a younger audience. Really happy with my final outcomes and the project itself. It challenged my skills in both typography and imagery design, and allowed myself to explore new skills such as packaging design.

Process Book

This is my term three process book, I am extremely happy with the outcome. Looking back at my three process books I felt that my first process book was strongest in regards to layout, size and composition, and that second process book was weaker in layout, and that my margin size was not big enough which meant that some of the text on my pages had been cut off due to the binding. Which enabled myself for this process book to develop what I had previously learnt and modify these issues. For the layout I again used sections on the very beginning being research, and this was very structured in regards to layout and where the image would go and how the typography would be presented. I then at the very end of the book presented my final deliverables of my main project, which were mainly photographs and then after that there was an evaluation on the deliverables themselves, followed by an evaluation of the project. I think that because I used introduction heading perhaps I could have included a contents which would help people to navigate around the book a lot easier, but this is something to keep in mind for my following project. The cover I tried to keep it very simple and I think this has been very effective, it mirrors the atmosphere of my latest project in style, and I also used an image which greatly inspired the contents of my Franchise project. Overall really happy with the outcome of my last process book of Year Two.

Paper Bag Development Part Two

Following on from my previous post, these paper bags show the development of the size of bags again, but also the key main changes in which made myself develop them in the first place; in regards to size, pattern, identity, layout compositions.

I think it is really interesting to see the initial pattern being very heavy lined, and spaced out and also extremely big. But then as the development goes on the imagery becomes a lot more delicate, and smaller in scale but with a well balanced pattern. I definitely think that the last experiment of layout was extremely important as myself and a tutor decided to change the layout from the pattern being on only half the bag to now being all over the bag with the identity now on the sick,r which is a much more modern and fun way of displaying the identity.

Really interesting to see overall how the packaging has changed and developed.

Paper Bag Development Part One

After completing the deliverables for my project, I felt that it would be rally interesting to look bag at the development of the paper bags. To see the different size experiments and how the imagery on the bags developed.

These bags above were initial experiments for both size and layout. I explore the size of the small and large bags by using A4 paper, and custom sized paper. I think the most difficulty I was having was known how functional the paper bag could be in regards to size. I knew that I was developing a tote bag, which could be used for larger buys, but these paper bags would be given out for perhaps smaller sized buys instead of bulk buys, which I have different products for. It definitely led myself to finally understanding and developing the custom sized large bag and the A3 smaller bag. It is interesting to look back and see how they initially developed.

Paper bags or plastic bags: which are best?

Paper bags or plastic bags: which are best?

From Topshop to Nike to Primark, brown paper bags are back in abundance on the high street. But are they any better for the environment than plastic bags?

When I was  looking at which bags to use for my franchise, I was looking at articles such as this to help myself fully understand which is better for the environment, as supporting local food producers also helps support the environment. This article discusses that not only are these brown paper bags better for the environment than plastic bags, they are also more fashionable. Consumers attitudes towards paper bags is described in this article as a much less ‘trashy than plastic’. Which also describes that paper is more modern, and fresher. I think it also links more to a much more natural, linking to local food producers being around for years.

When trying to find the best way to make the paper bags, I found that picture tutorials were not helpful, but video tutorials really allowed myself to follow step by step of the best way to make a paper bag. Luckily it was not needed to create a net for the paper packaging bag, and once I had fully understood how to make it I was able to follow it quite simple. I used this tutorial as I was able to customise the different sizes I folded the paper at, for example the bottom part of the bag the tutorial suggested that I use about 4cm of paper to fold with, however this did not create a large enough base for the paper bag, and therefore I decided to use 9cm for the larger bags, and around 6 for the smaller bags, giving more base for the bags to hold more produce.

Paper Bag Tutorials

These were a few paper bag tutorials which I initially was looking at for help of how to create the paper bags. However, I was extremely confused and lost with these draws and guides, I felt that they were quite over complicated but by simplifying them down it would have allowed myself to fully understand where to fold the bags etc. Therefore It led myself to look at video tutorials.

Deliverables Final Outcome

The overall outcome of my deliverables I am extremely happy with the final outcomes of each of the pieces of packaging. There are several deliverables; the crate which will be used for larger amount of produce, the banner used on the Kindred Foods market stalls, the tote bag, one large and one small paper packaging bag, and deli food wrapping sheets. Throughout the packaging there is a clear consistency from identity and pattern, and a clear relationship between the two elements. The identity and pattern never actually touch, there is always space around the identity, which can be seen in the banner; this helps to make sure the identity stands out the most, and isn’t being over powered by the background patterns.

The paper bags I think are extremely successful. The recent changes made after I changed the identity and created the final sticker which held the identity of the brand, and then only had the pattern across the entire bag made it much more modern, and vibrant, both elements work really well with one another. I also believe that the deli wrapping sheets were probably one of the most successful outcomes due to the paper stock, and how it worked extremely well as it was flexible to manipulate around the produce to sell.

The sticker was probably one of the main parts of the packaging which helps to make it much more modern, and contemporary and more importantly vibrant drawing in a fresher new audience basis. Allowing an area in which the identity of the brand and the local producer or farm can display their own brand, and informative details. I also think another element which works well is having rectangular shaped stickers for the packaging bags and round ones for the deli produce.

The one element which needed the most development was the tote bag. I would have liked to introduce some colour and refine down the printing outcomes, however due to the lack of time and accessibility for the printing room I was not able to. However, I really like the rough, very natural outcome of the piece definitely helps it to come across more personal and hand made. The crate which will be used for bigger bulk buys in produce I would really have liked to have printed if again it was accessible due to time and money. However the pink colour change to the identity definitely makes the crate more modern, and vibrant. Overall, I am really happy with the outcome of the packaging, and how they all work together and separately.

Packaging Into Context

As well as taking pictures of the packaging in a studio lighting set up, I felt that it was really important to get some shots taken from outside and the bags actually being used in context. And I think this worked really well, it allowed the bag to be used and shown to the audience how the bags could work, and how the sizes of the bags work to what the consumer requires. It was also really interesting to see how the patterns and the styles of the bags worked next to one another at different angels, for example the layout of the paper packaging bags may be different to the tote bag design but it still connected due to the pattern and the identity. Really glad I took these shots to see the final pieces working in context.

Background Experiments for Final Images of Deliverables

Feedback from my critique suggested that I should think about how I will set up these pieces of packaging, and the background. Therefore I wanted to explore different coloured backgrounds. A fellow student suggested that I should pick a background colour which was the opposites to pink which would help make the pink sticker stand out more, which was really helpful and definitely worked of the electric blue. However I think I would prefer to have a white background as this would allow the sticker to stand out more on its own, without the blue overpowering it and being another element to compete with.
